The Guizhou Provincial Department of Education has proposed establishing a new public university, turning the existing Guizhou Industry Polytechnic College in Qingzhen into "Guizhou Industry Polytechnic University". The proposal is currently in the pre-application public announcement phase and will require further evaluation and approval from the Ministry of Education.

Guizhou Industry Polytechnic College, known for its strong focus on engineering, is a higher vocational institution directly under the provincial education department. It originated as the Guizhou Chemical School, founded in 1958, and was upgraded to an independent vocational college in 2002.
Throughout its history, the college has achieved significant milestones, including being named a "National Key Secondary School", a "Guizhou Provincial Model Vocational College", and a "Guizhou Provincial Quality Vocational College". In 2007, it received an "Excellent" rating in the Ministry of Education's evaluation of vocational education. In 2021, it was designated as a high-level vocational school in Guizhou, and in 2023, it won a national second prize for teaching achievements and a Guizhou special award.
The college operates two campuses, one in Guiyang's Guanshanhu district and the other in Qingzhen, covering over 1,500 mu (100 hectares). It offers 25 programs across chemical engineering, bio-pharmaceuticals, mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science, and more, aiming to develop high-quality, skilled professionals.
