Qingzhen, a county-level city in Southwest China's Guizhou province, recently upgraded its medical payment system, with the Qingzhen Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital issuing its first electronic bill for outpatient charges.

The system links data with the city's finance department to support patient applications to apply for online payments.

According to the city government, electronic bills for medical charges are being supervised by the finance department and are the legal equivalent of standard printed invoices.

The new online system will greatly reduce the workload of departments issuing invoices. It will cut out the need for patients to wait in line to pay, improve hospital administration efficiency and cut the costs of office supplies.

Compared with standard medical payments, e-bills have obvious advantages in terms of processing and storage. Officials said locals can view, download or use e-bills for reimbursements at any time on their mobile phones.
